Prevent Persistent Microplastics

The Movement for a Microplastic Free Future exists to accelerate a global transition toward materials and systems that prevent persistent microplastics before they enter the environment.

MMPFF brings together leaders from industry, science, policy, academia, brands, and civil society to advance practical, science-based solutions that prevent persistent microplastics at the source.

Persistent microplastics are not only a waste problem. They are a materials problem. Prevention moves the conversation upstream, toward the materials and choices that determine whether persistent microplastics are created in the first place.

The Fourth R : Replace

Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle remain essential.
MMPFF adds a fourth principle: Replace.

Replace asks whether materials designed to persist should be replaced when better options exist, moving prevention upstream to material choice and design. As the science evolves, MMPFF works to turn growing understanding of persistence and human exposure into common direction.

Foundational Pillars

MMPFF’s strategy is built on three connected pillars.

Advance Understanding

Build a shared, science-based understanding of persistent microplastics, human exposure, material persistence, and practical solutions.

Foster Alignment

Bring industry, science, policy, academia, brands, innovators, and civil society together to create the alignment needed for collective action.

Accelerate Transition

Create the conditions for materials and systems that prevent persistent microplastics to be evaluated, adopted, and scaled through innovation, market adoption, policy, and the Fourth R: Replace.
